Enhancing Campus Security: A Comprehensive Approach to Tackle Cycle Theft at IIT Guwahati

Abstract:

This project addresses the pervasive issue of cycle theft at IIT Guwahati, investigating its impact on students' daily lives and proposing a multi-faceted strategy for prevention and intervention. Through rigorous research, surveys, interviews, and observational studies, the team aims to provide actionable insights to enhance campus security and create a safer environment for all.

Introduction:

The IIT Guwahati campus, nestled in the serene landscapes of Assam, hosts a vibrant academic community. However, the persistent challenge of cycle theft has disrupted the tranquility, impacting students' daily routines. This report delves into the multifaceted dimensions of cycle theft, exploring its implications and proposing comprehensive solutions.

Research Paper Analysis:

Combining various approaches, the team suggests a holistic prevention system. Real-time surveillance, well-lit areas, student involvement, rule implementation, online registration, signage, RFID technology, proper locks, and community education constitute the strategy. These measures collectively aim to deter theft and enhance overall security.

Survey and App Analysis:

A Google Form survey reveals that 25.4% of respondents experienced cycle theft, with 50% admitting to leaving their cycles unlocked. The One Stop App analysis identifies hotspots and patterns, emphasizing the need for targeted preventive measures. The report indicates a gap in reporting mechanisms, with 37% of students not reporting cycle theft.

Security Control Room Records Analysis:

Examining the Security Control Room records unveils over 60 reported cases in the last six months, with specific hotspots identified. Only 11 cases resulted in successful recoveries, highlighting challenges in cycle retrieval. The study underscores concerns about abandoned cycles, suggesting a need for systematic solutions.

Student Interviews and Offender Perspective:

Qualitative insights from victim and offender interviews provide a nuanced understanding. Victims express emotional distress and share experiences, while offenders shed light on motivations and justifications. Understanding the human dimensions of cycle theft is crucial for developing effective preventive strategies.

Observational Studies:

Various observational studies analyze cycle parking behavior, fresher cycle registration, lost cycle recording processes, cycle exit procedures, and illusions with cycle locks. These studies provide essential data for crafting targeted interventions, improving the overall cycle management system.

Ideation & Conceptualization:

The team proposes innovative solutions encompassing signage interventions, environmental design initiatives, a committee for cycle management, a cycle marketplace forum, security workshops, RFID technology implementation, new lock designs, legislative and policy changes, bike rack innovations, and a cycle retrieval challenge.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, this project offers a comprehensive framework to address cycle theft at IIT Guwahati. By combining quantitative and qualitative methods, the team provides a nuanced understanding of the issue and proposes actionable solutions. Implementing these recommendations promises to create a safer and more secure campus environment, ensuring that every cycle remains a source of freedom for students.

Future Implications:

The suggested interventions need careful implementation, involving collaboration with campus authorities, student bodies, and local law enforcement. Regular assessments of the implemented strategies should be conducted to ensure their effectiveness. Continuous feedback loops will be essential for refining and adapting the security framework over time.
